Billie Eilish totally brushes off the standing ovation she got after rocking the 2024 Oscars with her performance of "What Was I Made For?"

Billie Eilish, accompanied by her brother Finneas O'Connell, delivered a poignant rendition of "What Was I Made For?" from the film Barbie at the Oscars on March 10, 2024. The emotional performance moved the movie's director, Greta Gerwig, to tears.

Eilish, sporting attire with more pronounced pink tones for the Academy Awards, expressed surprise at the standing ovation received after concluding the song, but she took it in stride, laughing it off.

At 22, Eilish and O’Connell had their track "What Was I Made For?" nominated for Best Original Song at the awards bash, competing with Becky G’s “The Fire Inside” from Flamin’ Hot, Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie, Jon Batiste’s “It Never Went Away” from American Symphony, and Scott George’s “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” from Killers of the Flower Moon.

After snagging that Oscar nod, Eilish, 26, and O’Connell expressed their gratitude to the Academy in a heartfelt speech.

“We are incredibly honored to receive a nomination for ‘What Was I Made For?’ As lifelong fans of film, music in film and the Academy Awards, this means everything to us,” the duo wrote via Instagram in January. “We are so grateful to the Academy, its members, and to be recognized alongside so many songwriters that we respect and admire. Our deepest gratitude and thanks go out to the incomparable Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach for their genius vision and execution, the entire Barbie cast and crew, Lucky Chap Entertainment and the Warner Bros. Pictures team.”

They also gave props to Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, acknowledging how these two seamlessly integrated "[their] song into the fabric and heart of [Barbie]."

“And a special shoutout to Margot Robbie for her incredible foresight as a producer and brilliant performance that resonated with us so profoundly when writing this song. We are truly honored. Thank you,” they concluded.

Back in February at the 2024 Grammys, Eilish and O’Connell clinched the Song of the Year award, adding another accolade to their impressive collection.

In her acceptance speech, Eilish humorously exclaimed, "I’m shocked out of my balls," before expressing gratitude to her family and Gerwig, aged 40, for "making the best movie of the year."

Following the Grammys, Eilish opened up about a challenging period in her life that inspired the creation of "What Was I Made For?" She shared with reporters that she felt like an outsider, isolated in her own world, and experiencing a time when she didn't feel seen at all. However, the response to the song's release completely surprised her, as people resonated with it in a way that made her feel understood. She emphasized that the connection went even deeper.

It's worth noting that Eilish and O’Connell secured their first Oscar in 2022 for the song "No Time to Die" from the James Bond film of the same name.
