Ryan Reynolds, Robert Downey Jr. and More Stars Reveal What They Took From Set
Over the years, numerous actors have openly acknowledged taking souvenirs from the film and television sets they worked on.
Ryan Reynolds serves as a notable example of this practice. After a prolonged wait to secure his coveted role as Deadpool, he ensured to retain a tangible memento – his suit – when the production of the 2016 movie concluded. In a 2015 interview with Marie Claire, Reynolds admitted, "I loved wearing it, and I have run away with one. I'll probably get into trouble for saying that, but I've waited 10 years to do this movie. So, I'm leaving with a freaking suit."
In a Twitter exchange with Warner Bros. three years later, in May 2018, the Canadian actor faced a call-out for pilfering a ring his character wore in the 2011 film Green Lantern. The studio tweeted, "Sorry @VancityReynolds, we're going to need the ring back," prompting Reynolds to humorously respond, "Well, if we'd used a NuvaRing™️ in the first place, we wouldn't be in this mess. #Deadpool2."
Tom Sturridge
In an August 2022 interview with E! News, the British actor, portraying Dream (a.k.a. Morpheus) on Netflix's The Sandman, candidly admitted to securing a memento from the set. When questioned about taking a keepsake, Tom Sturridge revealed, "My pouch of sand." Reassuringly, he added, "It's safe," emphasizing its secure storage. Sturridge also pointed out, "So if we need it again, it's very safe."
Alexander Skarsgard
In a revelation during an April 2022 appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Alexander Skarsgard shared a unique keepsake from the set of The Northman. While his fellow cast members received swords and battle gear, the True Blood alum humorously disclosed, "It wasn't a choice, It was a gift. That's how much they valued my performance, my contribution to this movie."
Skarsgard elaborated, saying, "It's the g-string that I wore. The end fight takes place on an erupting volcano, and we're naked... So, that's what I wore for a week, and my character's quite wounded, so he's bleeding a lot profusely."
Lily James
Despite being heavily adorned in prosthetics to portray Pamela Anderson in Hulu's Pam & Tommy, the Downton Abbey alum stumbled upon a wardrobe piece that managed to stand out even without the character's distinctive features. Speaking on Entertainment Weekly's "Around the Table" in February 2022, Lily James shared, "In the Mexico montage, I had this amazing pink skirt and, like, very '90s halter top."
With a humorous acknowledgment of the character's large assets, James laughed and gestured to her chest, adding, "It looks a little different without... the, um. It still looks good!"
Tom Holland
While tackling spicy hot wings on First We Feast’s “Hot Ones,” the Spider-Man: No Way Home star shared a heartwarming story about receiving a special memento from one of his Marvel co-stars.
In December 2021, Tom Holland recalled, “My favorite souvenir was actually given to me, well actually to my little brother Paddy when Black Panther was coming out.” He continued, “Robert Downey Jr. was making Doctor Doolittle in London and he was staying down the road from where I live. He invited us to a screening of Black Panther at his house. Paddy comes running into the room, and he’s holding the original Iron Man helmet, that Downey had given to him as a gift. That’s a really special one for me because I was lucky enough to join the MCU, but I joined it very late, and that souvenir was from the original film.”
Rachel Leigh Cook
The She's All That star has preserved some memorabilia from her days on the '90s classic, having taken "a script and a call sheet," as she revealed during an interview with Entertainment Tonight in August 2021.
Allison Janney
The actress disclosed that she made off with the wig she wore during her time on Mom. Janney shared the amusing anecdote during an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in April 2021, revealing, "No one knew I was wearing a wig. And I come in for this season of Mom, and the producers see me like this [with grey hair], and they're like, 'What have you done?! You should've asked us before you did this to your hair!'" She continued, "And I'm like, 'Guys, I've been wearing a wig since season one, but nobody knew it.' Everyone in the world knows it now. But that wig is coming with me."
Janney didn't stop at the wig; she also secured "a few pairs of sweatpants," stating, "My character Bonnie loved to be comfortable, as does Allison Janney, so I took a lot of sweatpants and made off with them."
Dakota Johnson
In a Twitter Q&A for Glamour UK in February 2015, the actress from Bad Times at the El Royale playfully revealed the unconventional items she pilfered from the 50 Shades of Grey set. With a touch of humor, she admitted, "I stole lots of the underwear. They were comfortable," in one tweet. In another tweet, she shared, "I do have a flogger in my house. It’s in the garage with dust," providing a lighthearted glimpse into her keepsakes from the film.
Robert Downey Jr.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in April 2016, the Oscar nominee disclosed that he seized a substantial Avengers 'A' from the set of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Reflecting on the acquisition, he shared, “I have it. I said, ‘Why is it in England? Send it back to LA, I’ll put it in my office,” providing insight into his decision to claim a memorable piece from the film's set.
Chadwick Boseman
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in April 2018, the late actor had no reservations about proudly displaying the item he took as a souvenir from his role in Black Panther. Chadwick Boseman nonchalantly shared, “I have the beads, the Kimoyo beads. I actually have them on right now,” showcasing his personal connection to the iconic elements of his character.
Will Ferrell
The Saturday Night Live alum has made a habit of acquiring props from various film sets, and this includes a ring from Anchorman. Following his work on Step Brothers, he opted for a rather unconventional keepsake from the production. During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show in May 2020, he humorously shared, “These are my prosthetic testicles from Step Brothers. They’re life-like, and I have brought these out, much to the horror [of many]. At many a dinner party, I [have] presented these. These fake testicles are what was put on Brennan’s drum kit.”
